What’s So Special About Alfalfa

While alfalfa is a type of hay, there are many differences between alfalfa hay and grass hays (such as Timothy or Orchard). Both grass hay and alfalfa hay are excellent forages for herbivores, but there are some key nutritional differences. These fundamental differences need to be considered when building the optimal diet for your rabbit or guinea pig.

When compared to grass hays, Alfalfa contains much higher amounts of protein and calcium. The high protein levels in alfalfa make it a great hay for animals with high energy needs. Growing rabbits or guinea pigs that have yet to reach adulthood, as well as pregnant or nursing pets, benefit from the high nutrition found in Alfalfa Hay. While alfalfa is a great choice for energy-needy small pets, the higher nutrition can be harmful to adult rabbits or guinea pigs. Our furry little friends have a unique calcium metabolism when compared to other species. Rabbits and guinea pigs absorb calcium efficiently and any excess calcium is excreted in their urine. This metabolic system means that rabbits and guinea pigs are prone to urinary stones if there is too much calcium in their diet. Alfalfa Hay is also higher in calories and fat, so overfeeding can cause obesity, especially as these pets surpass adulthood.

Grandpa’s Best alfalfa is loaded with a natural sweet flavor and fragrance that will entice even the pickiest eaters. Your rabbit or guinea pig will be begging for more, but it’s important to limit the amount of alfalfa consumed by adult rabbits and guinea pigs. As soon as your small pet is old enough, it is crucial that you transition them to grass hay. Alfalfa can still be offered to adult rabbits and guinea pigs, but only as a treat in small quantities. We recommend consulting with your veterinarian for specific guidance to ensure your pet’s health.
