RHDV Statement

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV)

What is RHDV?

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV and RHDV2) is a highly contagious disease caused by the calicivirus found in rabbits. Both RHDV and RHDV2 strains have a very high mortality rate with a short incubation period ranging from one to five days. Many times, the only visible symptom of RHDV will be sudden death and bloody discharge from the nose or mouth. Direct transmission occurs by contact with infected animals, carcasses, bodily fluids (urine, feces, respiratory secretions), and hair. Surviving rabbits may be contagious for up to two months. Contaminated items such as clothing, food, cages, bedding, feeders, and water also spread the virus.

RHDV does not affect human health. RHDV and RHDV2 strains have been found in both domestic and wild rabbit populations in the United States but do not affect other species.

What are we doing about it?

Our team is committed to providing our customers a safe and healthy product for their pets, which is why we have increased our staff education and awareness of RHDV, as well as communicating concerns and safety expectations with our hay growers.

To help protect from RHDV, Grandpa’s Best takes two important steps before our hay ever reaches your pet: 1. We do not grow or source hay from any areas with reported outbreaks and are constantly monitoring the ARBA website for the latest outbreak information. 2. Whether grown locally by our sister company Bestifor, or sourced from specialty or contract growers, we ensure that all hay has been isolated in storage away from any elements, pests, and animals for a minimum of five (5) months before packaging. This rest period exceeds the current known studies of virus lifespan at room temperature and greatly minimizes the chance of transference.

What does this mean for you?

Because we are dedicated to crafting premium quality products for your furry friends, you can shop with confidence knowing that you will be providing your pet with safe and nutritious premium quality hay products.
