International Rabbit Day

International Rabbit Day

Sep 21, 2022 | News

Rabbits have had a long history as pets across the world. First domesticated in the 5th century in the Iberian Peninsula, rabbits became a household pet in Western Europe during the Victorian Era. Once rabbits made their way to the United States, they were soon living on farms and in gardens across the country. By 1910, it was clear the domesticated rabbit was here to stay with the creation of the American Rabbit Breeders Association (then the National Pet Stock Association of America). In 2012, a survey found that rabbits are the third most popular pet in the U.S. after cats and dogs. As of 2017, there were at least 305 domestic rabbit breeds in 70 countries around the world. Rabbits now even have their own holiday with the creation of International Rabbit Day in 1998. This special day takes place on the fourth Saturday of September – September 24 this year.

While there are too many to choose from, some of our favorite fun facts about rabbits include:

  • Rabbits can move their ears independently in all directions. Their ears are also integral in regulating their body temperature.
  • Rabbit teeth grow constantly, requiring lots of high-quality hay to keep their teeth grinding.
  • Pet rabbits can live up to 12 years.
  • Rabbits will sometimes jump and flick their heads and feet when they’re happy and excited in a move called a “binky.”

Looking at pop culture, there may be more famous rabbits than any other animal. Stories, movies, and major brands have brought us the Easter Rabbit, Peter Rabbit, Roger Rabbit, the White Rabbit, Bugs Bunny, the Trix Rabbit, the Energizer Bunny, the Velveteen Rabbit, Thumper, and more. As beloved as these fictional rabbits are, it’s important to consider the commitment of caring for a pet before bringing one of these furry friends into your family.
