Hay Offerings for Tortoises

Hay Offerings for Tortoises

Mar 25, 2022 | News

Our furry rabbit friends aren’t the only animals who thrive on hay. Larger animals also benefit from having this in their diet. An animal that consumes more hay than you would expect is the grassland tortoise, which benefits from a diet high in foraging material. The best types of hay for tortoises include any grass hay – especially Timothy Hay and Orchard Grass Hay – and a little bit of oat hay. While this may seem like a large variety of hay for one animal, each contributes to the grassland tortoise’s overall health in unique ways and is considered healthier than fruit or vegetables.

Timothy Hay is considered high fiber, although not all tortoises will enjoy the hard, crunchy pieces often found in this type of hay. For tortoises that prefer a softer hay, Orchard Grass Hay will be a favorite. While Orchard Grass contains slightly higher levels of protein than Timothy Hay, it’s high fiber and sweet taste make for a great hay to entice picky eaters.

Grandpa’s Best is proud to offer many of these hay varieties, Timothy Hay, Native Prairie Hay, and Orchard Grass Hay. Part of a sixth-generation family farm located in the heart of the United States, Grandpa’s Best has perfected the art of producing high-quality hay, forages, and grain crops. All products are available in various package sizes, including loose boxed hay and our super-efficient mini bale which provides an amazing amount of bulk hay while staying fresh. Grandpa’s Best recently sent Timothy Hay and Orchard Grass to Diving Tortoise Sanctuary in Florida, and the pairing was a hit with the tortoises there.
