Advice vs Feedback

Advice vs Feedback

Oct 13, 2024 | Thoughts & Musings

Feedback is backward-looking: it leads people to criticize you, or cheer for you. Advice is forward-looking: it leads people to coach you.

When we ask for advice, we open the door to valuable insights and guidance that can help us navigate challenges more effectively. This proactive approach invites others to share their experiences and knowledge, enabling us to make informed decisions. Instead of merely gathering opinions on our current strategies, we are tapping into a wealth of expertise that can open new paths and possibilities.

Moreover, seeking advice fosters collaboration and strengthens relationships. By demonstrating a willingness to learn from others, we create an environment where open communication thrives. Colleagues and mentors often appreciate being approached for their insights, as it validates their expertise and reinforces their role within the team. This collaborative spirit not only enriches our understanding, but also cultivates a supportive network, which can be invaluable during times of uncertainty or change.

Finally, focusing on advice rather than feedback encourages a growth mindset. Feedback often emphasizes what is wrong or needs improvement, which can inadvertently lead to defensiveness or discouragement. In contrast, advice invites constructive dialogue and exploration of solutions. By prioritizing guidance over evaluation, we position ourselves to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. This shift in perspective not only enhances our decision-making but also fosters resilience and adaptability – qualifying our essential need for thriving in today’s dynamic business landscape.

“A mentor is not someone who walks ahead of us and tells us how they did it. A mentor is someone who walks alongside us to guide us on what we can do”
-Simon Sinek

“To accept good advice is but to increase one’s own ability.”
-Unknown

…and speaking of advice, remember [and take to heart] Henry Ford’s statement: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
